Drafted by economists at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) the Least Developed Countries Report 2006 (full text) was released today in Geneva. The focus of this year's report is building productive capacities in least developed countries (LDCs), which means the ability to produce goods and services and the infrastructure and technical know-how for exporting them. Improving productive capacities promotes economic development and helps to improve the lives of the world’s poorest populations.

The report also focuses on the need to ensure that aid sent to LDCs ultimately contributes to creating enterprises that can generate employment for citizens of these countries who are leaving rural areas for cities. Without more productive jobs in LDCs, the reports states that there will be no foreseeable end to immigration from these countries to the industrialized nations of Europe and North America, a topic that has been very much in the news this year. More details about UNCTAD's work on LDCs, including a list of countries designated as such, is available on the UNCTAD Web site.
