This paper looks at the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in relations to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The report asserts that while the initial response to the MDGs by UN member nations was overwhelming, concerns are beginning to surface on how realistic the goals, targets and indicators of the MDGs are in terms of measuring and monitoring for concrete results.
This paper asks whether initiatives happening under the CBD process to reach the 2010 target are more tangible than the MDG level. The paper also explores whether there is a need to link the targets and indicators of the CBD with those of the MDGs. A third area of interest for this paper is the possibility of the MDGs utilising the programme of work under the CBD as an interim indicator of successful national implementation of sustainable development.
