Charities and private agents collect large volumes of used clothing from consumers in developed countries. Although much of this is sold back to customers in charity shops, a certain amount is exported. In fact, 64.5% of used clothing exports are absorbed by poor countries - often generating incomes and yielding government revenues. It has recently come under attack from charities and governments, who argue that the trade discourages the growth of local textile markets.
